truman doctrine meant that america was going to help south vietnam and stop it falling to communism

although south vietnams leader diem was corrupt and unpopular he was anti communist and usa supported him

eisenhower and kennedy presidents gave lots of money to south vietnam

sent military advisers

usa got more involved as communist threat remained
