What caused America to withdraw from Vietnam?

Causes

  • The war was unwinnable - The failure of the US tactics and the successful tactics of the Vietcong made the war unwinnable for the US.
  • The war was expensive. It cost $30 million a year to fight in the war. Also the human cost in the war was huge around 58,000 Americans died in the war.
  • The US public was against the Vietnam War. There was protests marches, draft dodging and Veteran marches where they would throw away their medals.
  • The media played a big part in the war. As 90% of Americans owned a TV and there was no censorship therefore events like the Tet Offensive was shown publicly

Effects

  • Knowing the war was unwinnable meant that the morale of the soldiers was terribly low. With low morale soldiers would not fight with their full potential.
  • The American public believed that a war on the other side of the world didn't need to have America's involvement. Also they believed that they shouldn't spend $30 million a year on a war when there own people were suffering.
  • The US public saw the war as immoral. They believe that killing innocent people was wrong and that America should withdraw from Vietnam. The media showed the public the horrors of the war and overall made America withdraw

Overall summary

America withdrew from the war because of the media, financial and human costs. All of theses things lead to America leaving the war in 1973. However none of America's training of the Vietnamese worked as Vietnam fell the communism in 1975
