Vaccination: A deliberate exposure to antigenic material, which activates the immune system to make an immune response and provide immunity

Antigenic Material used in vaccines  can take a variety of forms

• whole, live microorganisms - usually ones not as harmful as teh real disease but they have similar antigens so antibodies produced will by effective against the real pathogen
• Harmless of attenuated version of the pathogenic organism
• A dead pathogen
• Preparation of the antigons from a pathogen
• Some harmless toxin(toxid)
