Properties of materials can refer to three different factors of the material:

  • Aesthetic properties - The sensory qualities of a material.
  • Functional properties - The qualities of a material must possess in order to be fit for purpose, for example the correct weight, size, etc..
  • Mechanical properties - A material's reaction to physical forces, e.g. strength, plasticity, ductility, hardness, brittleness, malleability, etc..
