Modern Materials and Products 1

Thermo-ceramics

  • Extremely hard
  • Very stable at high temperatures
  • Thermo-ceramics are produced by combining ceramic and metalic powders together
  • Brittle and crack or break if there are any imperfections in the material
  • Very expensive

Tinted glass

  • The glass has particles of silver halide in it which reacts with UV light and goes dark this reaction is reversable so when the light is removed the glass goes clear

Solar Panels

  • Renewable energy resource
  • High start up cost
  • Low running cost
  • Unreliable

Modern Materials and Products 2

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD)

  • Very small amounts of current are needed to power LCDs so they can be portable
  • Dont have the same viewing angle as old TVs and sometimes the picture is inferior

Electroluminescent Lighting (EL)

  • Converts electrical energy into light by applying a voltage across electrodes
  • Low power consumption
  • Waterproof
  • Highly reliable and highly visible
  • They have a limited lifespan
