HOW DID TRADE DEVELOP IN THIS PERIOD?

  • Woolen cloth (kersey) exports almost doubled and there was an increase in the export of hides and tin.
  • These exports were counterbalanced by an increase in the import of wine, this suggests that the pending power of the more prosperous classes increased.
  • The increasing trade with Spain, brought about by Spanish exploitation of the Americas, drove up prices in the rest of Europe. England remained in an advantageous position because merchants could buy cheap goods at home and sell them at higher prices on the continent.
  • The Merchant Adventurers dominated English trade however they owed their position to the large loans that they gave to the Crown, in return for which they were granted privilages denied to other English merchants.
