Newspapers and television news programmes do not react spontaneously to world events - news coverage is shaped by the way television news companies and newspapers are organized and which audiences they are aimed at.

Sources of news

Many of us naively believe that news stories are generated by reporters tekking the streets and interviewing witnesses to particular events.

Instead they recieve press releases from pressure groups, public relations companies, etc. all of whom wish to pulasize their activities.

Financial costs

Sending pesonnel overseas and booking satalite connections can be very expensive and may result in the BBC or ITN giving us 'news' reports even if very little is actually happening, in order to justify costs.
