Theories of the family - Marxism

• Argue that all institutions benefit capitalism- the system where the proletariat sell their labour to the bourgeoisie in return for a wage.

• Argue that family has 3 roles which benefit capitalism:

1. Allowing the inheritance of property- in the past (primitive communism) property & sexual partners were shared- identity of children not known. As wealth & the idea of private property emerged, so did the nuclear family- allows the bourgeoisie to pass the means of production (factories, etc) on to their children- wealth stays in that class.
