Marxism is both a structural and conflict theory and the belief that society is a capitalist system whereby the wealthy ruling class (bourgeoisie) exploit the working class (proletariat) in a variety of ways.

The working class are socialised into the ruling class ideology which renders the proletariat unaware of the exploitation of which they are victims. This is called false consciousness.
