THE STRUCTURE OF THE ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere is the mixture of gases held to the Earth's surface through gravity. It is mostly made up of Nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). At 40m and below is 99% of the atmosphere.

TROPOSPHERE = 0-12km

Temperatures decrease with height due to distance from the heat source (the Earth's surface whcih gains and retains heat more effectively than the surrounding atmosphere). But also because at altitude increases, the atmospheric pressure decreases. This means that…
