In 1623 Charles and Buckingham went on a secret visit to Spain to try and secure a marriage to the Princess Infanta Isabella. Their secret departure and unannounced arrival in Spain wrecked James' plans of leaving the running of government to Charles. The visit ended in complete humiliation, the Spanish stalled and then cancelled the marriage plans.

By 1624 they had returned to England, determined on getting revenge.
