'The Theatre' 

  • 1572 - James Burbage became head of an acting troupe. He asked Robert Dudley to be patron of his troupe.
  • 1574 - The Earl got permission from Elizabeth, so the troupe became known as the Earl of Leicester's Men. With this, Burbage and his sons got a license from Elizabeth.
  • 1576 - Burbage, being a carpenter before being an actor, built the first theatre; 'The Theatre'. 

The Beginning of 'The Globe' 

  • As 'The Theatre' was built on land owned by the Puritan, Giles Allen; once the lease ran out, Allen prevented the lease from being renewed.
  • In response, Burbage, his sons, the troupe and labourers, dismantled 'The Theatre' and rebuilt it south of the Thames. This meant that when Allen got back from his country house after Christmas, 'The Theatre' was no more, but 'The Globe' had been built (1599). 
  • Once built, 4 actors invested in it so the theatre could be afforded : Thomas Pope, Augustine Philips, John Hemings and William Shakespeare (Shakespeare is the one you need to remember, as he is the most famous). 

Actors:

There are three types :

  • Sharers - Give money to the theatre and receive a share from the profits created from performances. 
  • Hirelings - Paid weekly and play 'normal' parts.
  • Apprentices - Boys who played the women who weren't paid much.
