The Decemvirate was a group of 10 men (it's in the name) who were picked by the senate to make a new law code. they replaced the tribunes AND the consul. they were all patricians.

They published 10 laws, or 'tables'. they were really good but the people wanted 2 more tables, so the senate got 10 more men (the second decemvirate) to finish it. the plebs liked this and didn't want the tribunes anymore.

Appius Claudius Crassus was really popular. TOO popular, when making the 2nd decemvirate the senate thought that putting HIM in charge of the election process was a good idea. it wasn't, he chose himself and 9 allies. livy called them the '10 tarquins', HARSH livy! :0 they had 12 lictors as bodyguards.

crassus used his power to attack plebs, and they did make those 2 other tables of laws that 'protected' patricians, for example they made a law that stopped plebs and patricians from marrying.
