Psychotic disorder characterised by loss of contact with deterioration with environment, noticeable in level of functioning in everyday life, and by disintegration of personality expressed as disorder of feeling, thought, perceptions and behaviour

Positive Symptoms - Type 1

  • Reflect an excess or distortion in an abnormal repertoire of behaviour and experience
  • Thought disorder
  • > irrational thinking
  • > disorganised conversation
  • Delusions
  • > belief contrary to fact 
  • > eg. being controlled by others 
  • Hallucinations 
  • > seeing things not really there 
  • > auditory, voices
  • > smells 

Negative Symptoms - Type 2

  • Reflect an absense or deficit of behaviours that are normally present 
  • Normal behaviours missing 
  • Flattened emotional response
  • Lack of eye contact 
  • Failure to experience pleasure
  • Won't persist with things 
  • Poor speech 
  • Loss of motivation

Cognitive Symptoms

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Poor psychomotor
