What are positive symptoms?
Excesses and distortions (e.g. hallucinations & delusions) present in acute episodes.

What are negative symptoms?
Behavioural deficits (Apathy, Alogia, Anhedonia, Asociality, Flat Affect) endure into chronic episodes.

What are disorganised symptoms?
Disorganised Speech (problems speaking so listener can understand/changing topic) Disorganised behaviour (trouble making behaviour conform to everyday standards.

Uncategorised symptoms?
Catatonia (move rapidly/repeat gestures), Catatonic Immobility (Hold unusual poses for long periods), Inappropriate effect (emotional response out of context).

3 Phases of Schizophrenia?
1) Prodromal, 2) Active, 3) Residual

Epidemiology basics?
3.2% population, onset mid 20s/early 30s, more common in men, often after period of stress

Genetic Aetiology?
Family, Twin and Adoption Studies - high risk for family members, DZ twins and adopted with biological Sz mother.

Dopamine theory?
Sz may be caused by over-activity or elevated levels of dopamine.

Brain structure/function?
1) Enlarged ventricles

What does the diathesis- stress model suggest?
Schizophrenia caused by vulnerability (predisposing factors) and triggered by life stresses.

Past Treatmens?
ECT, Shaking, Cold Baths, Trepanation, Blood Letting.

Drug Treatments?
1st Gen = treated positive symptoms, bad side effects, 2nd Gen = positive and disorganised symptoms but reduced immune system, 3rd Gen = as effective as 1st but less side effects.

What is the MATRICS project?
Compares medications for each individual by assessing schizophrenia stage and choosing most appropriate medication.

Cognitive Therapy (CBT)?
Change thinking, Chalenge Delusional Thoughts, Coping Strategies, Coping Strategy Enhancement.

What is Community Care?
Treat acute symptoms vigorously so person can return to care of GP and community.

Factors influencing recovery?
1) Non-Compliance, 2) Social Factors, 3) Beliefs about medication.
