  • won as more skilled in gaining support than Butler
  • he had gained respect from doing a fine job as minister of housing
  • traditional Tory
  • Britain was prosperous but warning about inflation

GENERAL ELECTION OF 1959

  • Labour appeared backward, unpatritotic and out of touch
  • Labour arguing about nuclear & nationalisaton
