Mr Birling

Responsible for the death of Eva Smith because she used to work for Mr Birling. Eva Smith was an innoncent young woman who worked in one of Mr Birlings' factories. Eva Smith asked Mr Birling if she could be paid more money for working in the factory as it wasnt enough to keep her alive. Mr Birling refused to give her a pay rise so Eva decided to go on Strike. Because of this, Mr Birling fired Eva leaving her with no job, no parents and no home.

Mr Birling does not regret firing Eva Smith as he believed she was out of order asking for more money, "They was averaging about twenty-two and six, which was neither more nor less than is paid generally in the industry. They wanted rates rised so they could average about twenty-five shillings a week, i refused of course." The words, "of course" suggest he was only doing what any business man would do at that point in time.
