- Stalin feared Mao as a rival for leadership
TREATY OF ALLIANCE;
- signed after 2 months of negotiations because Mao didnt' watnt to sign
- the Chinese were offended that they were receiving unfriendly treatment
- even Khrushchev noted that it was an 'insult to Chinese people'
KOREAN WAR;
- Stalin encouraged China to send troops to Korea eventually committing one million
- Soviets forced the Chinese to pay for everything, $1.35 billion
- once Stalin died, it seemed as though the tension could be removed
THE SPLIT;
- secret speech made by Khrushchev in 1956 denouncing Stalin
- crashing of the Hungarian uprising showed that the USSR failed at containing revolutionary forces
- Khrushchev's peaceful coexistence conflicted with Mao
KHRUSHCHEV'S VISIT TO BEIJING;
- Khrushchev attempted to ease tension with Mao by visiting him in Beijing, 1958
- however Mao made a point to make Khrushchev uncomfortable through giving him a hotel with no air conditioning in summer which was also plagued with mosquitoes
