- Food production:
- What happens to food before it reaches our plates:
- Processing = making changes to foods
- Most foods are processed
- Processing makes food safe, appetising and good to eat; ready to be transported; convenient and easy to buy, store and use; appealing and attractive to consumers; ready to prepare, cook and serve
- Food manufacturers can make foods exactly the same every time, so consumers will buy them again and again
- What happens to food before it reaches our plates:
- Primary food processing:
- Foods processed straight after harvest (plants) or slaughter (livestock)
- Processing makes them ready to use, e.g. wheat grains turned into flour/meat carcase cut into separate joints
- Primary processing of plants: sorting (sizes), trimming, throwing away damaged ones, washing, wrapping in packaging, adding stickers, storing
- Stages for turning wheat grains (seeds) into flour:
- Harvest - Clean - Milling to crush grains and separate the grain layers - Sieving to remove some layers, e.g. bran/wholemeal flour = 100% of the grain; wheatflour = 85% of the grain; white flour = 70% of the grain
- Primary processing of meat:
- Slaughter - Drain blood - Remove skin - Remove internal organs - Hang carcase in cool place for…
