  • Blacks were enied legal and political rightsand segregation was enforced
  • All began in 1955 when Rosa Parks said that she wouldn't sit at the back of the bus
  • Bruce describes the black clergy as the back bone of this movement led by Martin Luther King
  • Clergy gave the whole movement legitimacy and they believed that God wouldn't of wanted it
  • Churches provided a meeting place and a place of comfort for protesters
  • Religious events united everyone involved together and helped them get through the period of oppression
