- Bruce- using case studies he has 2 exmaples of social protest that have been inspired by religion in USA.
- AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT-
- This is the black civil rights movement
- 1950's and 60's
- to end racial segregation
- Blacks were enied legal and political rightsand segregation was enforced
- All began in 1955 when Rosa Parks said that she wouldn't sit at the back of the bus
- Bruce describes the black clergy as the back bone of this movement led by Martin Luther King
- Clergy gave the whole movement legitimacy and they believed that God wouldn't of wanted it
- Churches provided a meeting place and a place of comfort for protesters
- Religious events united everyone involved together and helped them get through the period of oppression
