Changes made to improve the area:

  • Old buildings were renovated

  • Run down unattractive buildings were rebuilt and restyled. However Shambles square boasts the city’s oldest buildings, including The Old Wellington Inn and Sinclairs Oyster Bar (both of which had been dismantled and relocated).

  • Upmarket department stores were opened (include Selfridges and Harvey Nichols)

  • Large areas were pedestrianised

  • Print work s entertainment complex was built in an old printing press site

  • Urbis exhibition centre was built in the cathedral gardens

  • Other buildings were constructed or renovated

  • Old industrial buildings were turned into new residential properties

  • The Arndale centre was rebuilt and renovated; it has a new glazed front and roof od to make it shopper friendly

  • Park which has the cathedral and millennium centre

  • The old corn exchange has been turned into hotels and bars, and is a listed building

  • This a rrenowned gay village which hosts annual gay pride festival
