Proetins have multyple functions:
- They can be used as a structural component of tisses
- Some hormones
- Antibodies
- Enzymes
Proteins are large molecules made of longchain amino acids whcih are folded to make specific shapes which enables other molecules to fit into the protein.
Enzymes
Enzymes are used to speed up reactions(catalyst). Depending on what enzyme it is, each enzyme will have a temperature and a pH that it works most efficiently. If the temperature is too low or too high then the enzyme will become denatured(does not work).
3 different enzymes are used in the digestive system to spped up the reaction of certain food.
- Protease - digests proteins and produces amino acid
- Lipase - digests fats and oils to produce fatty acids and glycerol
- Amylase - digests starch to produce sugars
