States of Matter

  • There are three states of matter - solid liquid and gas.
  • All materials are made up of particles
  • State depens on how strong the particles stick together (attraction)
  • This depends on the material, temperature and pressure

Particle Theory

Particles in a Solid:

  • strong forces of attraction between particles
  • particles held closely in fixed positions in regular arrangement
  • particles vibrate
  • particles don't move - definite shape and volume
  • not easily compressed
  • usually dense

Particles in a Liquid:

  • some forces of attraction between particles
  • particles can move past each other but stick together
  • doesn't have a definite shape
  • keep the same volume
  • not easily compressed
  • quite dense
