Describe the particle arrangement and movement in solids liquids and gases
Solids: the particles are tightly packed together and only vibrate. LIquids: the particles are still a little bit close but are able to move around each other slowly. Gases: the particles a very spread apart and move around really fast.
1 of 9
Suggest the state of a substance when given its properties
Packed tightly together and vibrate: solid. Very spread apart and move really fast: gas a little bit close but are able to move around each other slowly: liquid
2 of 9
Describe the changes of state between solids, liquids and gases
Melting: a solid turning into a liquid by being heated. Evaporating: a liquid turning into a gas by being heated Condensation: a gas turning into a liquid by being cooled
3 of 9
Describe what happens when a solid dissolves in terms of particle arrangement
The particles begin to separate and mix with the liquid’s particles
4 of 9
Explain how to use evaporation to obtain a solid from a solution
You heat the solution so that the liquid will evaporate leaving the solid.
5 of 9
Explain how to use filtration to separate out a solid and a liquid
You pour the solution through a funnel with filter paper in it into a beaker leaving the solid in the funnel and liquid in the beaker.
6 of 9
Explain how to use distillation to separate out two liquids
You heat the mixture to the boiling point of the liquid with the lowest boiling point in a distillation flask which has a water condenser running from it to the beaker. When it gets to the lowest boiling point that liquid will evaporate -

Explain how to use distillation to separate out two liquids
- and go through the water condenser and into the beaker leaving the other liquid in the distillation flask. To get the best results repeat this.
8 of 9
Suggest a suitable method of separating out a given mixture, e.g. sugar and sand.
You mix water with sugar and sand giving you a solution and some sand. Then use filtration which will separate the solution and the sand. Then use evaporation to evaporate the liquid leaving the sugar.
