A ramdom change in the organisms base sequence DNA, they can sometimes be inherited.

They are happening all the time, However the chance is increased by exposure to certain substances or types of radiation.

Most mutations have very little or no effect on the protein, some will change to such a small extent that the function,appearence is unaffected.

Some mutations will code for an alternate protein, this could affect its ability to perform its function.
