Strength: supported by research evidence - Baddeley
Research by Baddeley (1966) shows that coding in STM is acoustic whereas coding in LTM is semantic. This helps to prove the MSM because it shows that there are different coding methods for STM and LTM, suggesting they are different and separate stores

Strength: supported by brain scans
Brain scans have shown that the prefrontal cortex is active when a person is using STM and the hippocampus is active when LTM is used. This shows that STM and LTM use different parts of the brain, suggesting that they are different and separate stores

Strength: supported by research evidence - HM
HM underwent surgery and a crucial part of his hippocampus was removed. His LTM was damaged but his STM still functioned perfectly. This suggests that LTM and STM are different, separate stores because his STM still functioned even though his LTM was damaged

Weakness: the MSM is too simplistic - Craik and Watkins
