- Peterson & Peterson.
- What was the study?
- To investigate the duration of short-term memory.
- Provide empirical evidence for the multi-store model.
- What did they do?
- Conducted a lab experiment
- 24 participants had to recall trigrams
- To stop rehearsal participants were told to count backwards.
- In 3's or 4's from a specfiic number until a red light appeared.
- Conducted a lab experiment
- What did they find?
- The longer the interval delay the less trigams were recalled.
- Participants were able to recall 80% of trigrams after 3 second delays.
- After 18 seconds less than 10% of trigrams were recalled correctly.
- The conclusion?
- Short-term memory has a limited duration when rehearsal is prevented.
- The study shows that short-term memory and long-term memory are different due to duration.
- Evaluation
- STRENGTH
- Supports the multi-store model theory
- Due to duration creating a difference between short-term and long-term memory.
- Supports the multi-store model theory
- WEAKNESS
- Low ecological validity
- Recalling trigrams is not an everday activity.
- Low ecological validity
- STRENGTH
- What was the study?
