Monosaccharides

Monosaccharides are small organic molecules and are the building blocks for the larger carbohydrates. Monosaccharides have the general formula (CH2O)n and their names are determined by the number of carbon atoms (n) in the molecule. A triose has three carbon atoms, pentose has 5 and a hexose has 6. Glucose is a hexose sugar. The carbon atoms of a hexose numbered 1-6. All hexose sugars share the same formula (C6H12O6) but a different molecular structure. The carbon atoms of monosaccharides make
