The Theory of The Four Humours-

• Created by Hippocrates in Ancient Greece

-thought that purging and blood letting helped cure illnesses

-some of his ideas are still used today e.g. the hipocratic oath, an oath taken by new physicians promising to uphold ethical standards and procedures

• stated that, as the univsere was made up of four elements (fire, water, earth,air), so was the body:

-phlegm:the watery substance coughed up or sneezed or expelled in tears
