How to measure a river

A number of characterstics need to be analysed

  • Changes in depth and width measurement (compare up and downstream)
  • The nature, roughness and calibre of the bedload
  • Comparing channel and flow characteristics at normal and bankfull conditions
  • comparing channel profiles across a meander and a straight secton, or a riffle and a pool
  • Stream gradient
