Geography - Rivers, floods and management.

Unit 1.

?
How is River Discharge defined?
The volume of water, passing a measuring point , in a river in a given time.
1 of 16
How can river discharge be illustrated?
Through a Hydrograph.
2 of 16
What does a storm hydrograph show?
Variations of river discharge, during a rainstorm.
3 of 16
On a Hydrograph, what is shown by the rising limb?
The discharge rising, perhaps to do with the rainfall.
4 of 16
What indicates the highest flow in a river channel?
The Peak Discharge.
5 of 16
What is the time delay between maximum rainfall and the peak discharge on a hydrograph?
Lag time
6 of 16
What is the receding limb on a hydrograph?
Fall in discharge, back to base level.
7 of 16
What factors influence river erosion?
The weight of the water, the height of the river, above it
8 of 16
What is the scouring and scraping action of materials carried along by a river.
Abrasion
9 of 16
What is the process where minerals in a rock are dissolved by weak acids.
Corrosion
10 of 16
What is the process where fragments of rock striking each other as they move down a river, reducing them in size?
Attrition
11 of 16
What is the process of the sheer power of water is used to break down rocks.
Hydraulic action
12 of 16
Where does Lateral Erosion normally occur?
Middle stretch of a river
13 of 16
What is the Competence of a river?
The diameter of the largest particle it can carry for a given velocity.
14 of 16
What is capacity of a river?
The measure of the amount of material it can carry - the total volume of the load.
15 of 16
What does the Hjulstrom graph show?
The relationship between velocity of a river and the size of particles that can be eroded, deposited and transported.

For question 13 the answer should be in the lower stretch of a river as there is a higher kinetic energy.

Question 13 has the wrong answer, it should be in the lower stretch of the river, because there is the least potential energy to erode downwards, as the lower course isn't that high above base level but the most kinetic energy to erode outwards. Question 8 is also really oddly worded. Apart from that this is a good quiz, thanks :)
