palaces:

the megaron was the most important part of the palace. it would have been in the highest part of the city.

it started with the entrance porch, which would have had columns and a room behind that, known as a vestibule/front room. 

the most important bit of the megaron was the hearth, which would have been used for cooking and/or religious purposes. the king's throne also would have been in the same room as the hearth. there was a hole in the roof of the hearth room so the inhabitants wouldn't suffocate
