Kielder Water, Northumberland

What is it?

* Dam on North Tyne tributary with Kielder reservoir behind

* Water extracted from Tyne and pumped 8km uphill through huge pipes to holding reservoir

* Water then transported 40km in tunnels to River Wear and River Tees

Uses:

* Water in Nissan car plant and oil refineries in Middlesborough

* Regulates flow of Tyne

* HEP

* Wildlife conservation
