- Isaac Butt emerged as a national leader in 1869 as President of the United Amnesty Association, which had been set up to campaign for the release of Fenian prisoners

- Significance of the Association: drew together different strands of nationalist opinion

- Believed in Constitutional Monarchy

The Irish Church Act 1869:

- Proposal to disestablish the Church of Ireland; remove it as the 'state' Church

- Met with fierce resistance from Conservatives in HOC and HOL
