Hard and Soft Water

Hard water contains dissolved calcium or magnesium ions. 

  • as rain falls, carbon dioxide in the air dissolves in it to form carbonic acid
  • H2O + CO2 = H2CO3
  • as this flows through chalk or limestone the carbonic acid reacts with calcium carbonate to make calcium hydrogencarbonate. 
  • H2CO3 + CaCO3 = Ca(HCO3)2
