A refuge is a centre of excellence in spiritual terms; it is where support and guidance can be found, as Buddhists follow a very demanding and challenging spiritual path

Buddha

• A teacher, the awakened or enlightened one
• A human being, not a divine being
• Buddhists do not worship the Buddha; they see him as an example for others to follow
• In both Zen and Pure land, our own tathagatagarbha is emphasised
