General Properties of Waves

1) Waves transfer energy.

2) Waves may either be transverse or longitudinal. In transverse waves the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. In longitudinal waves the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer.

3) Electromagnetic waves are transverse, soud waves are longitudinal and mechanical waves may be either transverse or longitudinal.

4) All types of electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed through a vacuum (space).

5) Electromagnetic waves form a continuous spectrum:

Appreciate the frequencies (Varying from about 10^-15 to 10^4) and wavelengths.

6) Longitudinal waves show areas of compression and rarefraction.
