The melting of Arctic ice due to climate change has opened up other opportunuties;

  • Tourists on cruises can now visit during a wider range of months
  • There is easier access for resource extraction (mainly oil and gas)

These activities can have benefits and threats for local communities and the environment

Environmental impacts of exploitation:

  • Trans alaska pipeline could stop migration of carribou
  • Road development can endanger animals and destroy their habitats
  • Tourists - disturb wildlife - litter
  • Oil spills - directly kills wildlife
