BOWLBY'S EVOLUTIONARY/MONOTROPIC THEORY OF ATTACHMENT

General AO1:              All behaviour is recipricol and innate- not learnt

John Bowlby (1969)- suggested children deprived of attachment may suffer long-term effects

Hierarchy of attachments (created from multiple attachments)

Imprinting (innate readiness - attachment)

  • ASCMI  (AO1)

Adaptive/innate - Bowlby believes children = innate drive to be attached ∵ has long term benefits. (Similar to imprinting). Ensures infants proximity to caregiver for food + protection = adaptive ∵ increase chances of survival.

Social releasers (babies - survival - proximity to caregiver) (characteristics that elicit caregiving)

Critical Period (3-6 months) (attachment formation)

Monotropy (no
