Events during mitosis

Mitosis is needed for GROWTH of multcellular organisms and for REPAIRING DAMAGED TISSUE. It is also a method of ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION for some plants, animals and fungi. 

It is one continuous process, but it explained by separating it into 4 division stages- prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase (and cytokinesis).

Interphase comes before mitosis in the cell cycle. It's when cells grow and replicate their DNA ready for division.

Interphase: Cells may appear inactive during this stage, but they are quite the opposite. This is the longest period of the complete cell cycle during which DNA replicates, the centrioles divide, and proteins are actively produced.
