mitosis and meiosis

?

I. Ploidy

The number of complete sets of chromosomes in a cell

(In humans the total is 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs )

(in humans the total 23 individual chromosomes)

Haploid (1n):

Diploid (2n):

II.  Cell division

A.  Mitosis results in more of the same type of cell and occurs during growth of the organism.

B.  Meiosis results in the formation of haploid gametes or sex cells

Prokaryotes that lack complex DNA structures like chromosomes reproduce by splitting through binary fission.

III.  There are 2 types of reproduction

A.  Asexual reproduction results when a single celled organism splits.

B. Sexual reproduction results from the unification of 2 gametes created by meiosis

IV.  Mitosis

 A.  Mitosis is an orderly series of events that results in the equal distribution of the chromosomes that carry the genetic information to the two new cells

B). Stages of Mitosis

cell cycle (http://legacy.owensboro.kctcs.edu/gcaplan/bio/Notes/cell_cycle.jpg)

   A.  This is a non-dividing stage; the cell spends most of its time in this stage.

B.  Stages of Mitosis

1). Interphase

non-dividing stage

2).  Prophase

i). The DNA is duplicated

ii). The DNA is tightly coiled into chromosomes.

3).  Metaphase

i). the lining up of the chromosomes
