- Black Caribbean students may speak creole (slang) which disadvantages them
- attitudes and values
- may be socialised into Sugarman's values (fatalism etc) which is not the 'right' mindset for educational success
- family structure
- many black families are led by single mothers
- a lack of male role models may cause anti-school ideas in Black boys
- Asian families
- more likely to be strong against racism. Black Caribbeans are less cohesive and resistant to racism
