    • Material Deprivation
      • The Swann Report- socioeconomic status was a factor in low levels of achievement of Afro-Caribbean pupils.
        • Chinese, African, Asian and Indian groups are more likely to be in a higher class position and are less likely to experience material deprivation.
        • Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Afro- Caribbean groups are more likely to be in a lower class position.
          • This can result in poor housing, periods of unemployment , poverty and material deprivation.
    • External factors
      • Language can be a barrier for immigrant families.
      • Having an accent can influence teacher labels.
      • High levels of divorce and single parenthood in Afro- Caribbean could results in material deprivation.
      • Driver and Ballard - close knit extended families and high parental expectations increases achievement levels in Asian communities.
      • Driver and Ballard- Asian children whose first language was not English were as good at English as their classmates by the age of 16.
