Encoding in STM and LTM

Baddeley (1966) investigated the type of encodng that is preferred by the short-term memory and long-term memory stores.

He presented his participants with 4 word lists:

• List 1-Acoustically similar 
• List 2-Acoustically dissimilar
• List 3-Semantically similar
• List 4-Semantically dissimilar

Baddeley gathered 75 participants, they each heard 1 list that was repeated 4 times, after they were given a new list with the same words but in a different order-they had to rearrange the words back into the correct order.
