Problems with Spain:
-controlling the Netherlands which was England's main route into Europe.
-controlled much of the New World.
-The New World provided tobacco, sugar and silver.
-anyone who wanted to trade in the New World needed a license from Spain.
-Many English merchants ignored the Spanish rules and attacked their ship. (angered Phillip)
how Drake caused tension
-took Spanish cargo and ignored trading rules.
-Elizabeth supported him and she gave him secret orders to attack Spain's land.
-making them richer.
Consequences
-Drake successfully atacked ports and ships.
-he returned in 1580 with £400,000 Spanish treasure.
-used some of this money to fund other voyages.
-elizabeth knighted Drake.
