Definitions of crime and deviance

Crime = behaviour which breks laws and is punished by the legal system

Deviance = behaviour which goes against the norms, and values and expectations of social group or society

Crime is mostly deviant, but not all deviance 

Crime and Deviance are socially constructed

  • crime and deviance are culturally determined 
  • Plummer (1979) made a distinction between situational deviance and societal deviance
