What is it?

Regular temporary separation, which is less than 24 hour care, outside the home environment, not with a family member.

  • Nursery

Parents are entitled to free nursery places for all children aged 3 and above. Nurseries are staffed by trained workers and may be attached to a primary school, often gaining benefits from using the school facilities. They are inspected by Ofstedand required to plan the activities.

There should be 1 member of staff for every 8 children aged 3 to 5.

There should be 1 member of staff for every 4 children aged 2 to 3.

There should be 1 member of staff for every 3 children under the age of 2.

  • Childminder

Children receive free care at the childminder's house, they often have young children of their own and the children are able to socialise together. They must be registered and inspected by Ofsted.

  • Informal arrangements
