01   Evaluate the view that globalisation has led to increased levels of crime.

  • new types of crime- cyber crime. A03:
  • new opportunities for crime-drug cartels across borders. A03:
  • more effective ways of tackling crime- surviellence. A03: Displacement.
  • rise of technology- more opportunity to learn about crime. A03:
  • states tackling human right abuses- UN. eg-Afghanistan. A03: states tackle hr for their own benefits, USA wanted to overthrow the Taliban.

02 Evalute the usefulness of the functionalist approaches in understanding crime and deviance.

  • crime leads to social solidarity- eg, manchester bombing. A03: crime is needed to bring people together, but this pproach ignores that their needs to be a victim.
  • Boundary maintenance teaches us right from wrong, Madeleine Mccann taught parents to be more protective. A03: Reminds us right from wrong, ignore the victim.
  • anomie= rejection of norms and values, london riots. A03: crime has negative impacts, but this doesnt explain why all crimes are committed, eg stealing due to poverty.
  • merton strain theory, conformity and retreatism. A03: understands varied response but is there more than 5? only explains utilitarian.
  • working class leads to 3 subcultures (cloward+ ohlin) criminal, conflict and retreatist. A03: insight into wc delinquency but exaggerates the difference between the subcultures.

03  Evaluate sociological contributions to our understanding of the relationship between crime and the media.

  • Distorted portrayal of criminals- exaggerates wc criminals whist uc are rarely profiled. A03: wwhite collar crime is hidden, not an accurate representation.
  • causing crime- desensitisation to crime almost normalising it. A03: oversensitisation, pushing people away from committig crime.
  • relative deprivation- capitalist advertisment makes people hungry and jealous of material goods. A03:
  • moral panics- exaggerate the risk of crime and victimisation, labels subcultures. A03: Hall- black muggers resulting in it being more difficult for a black person to be employed.
  • policing- makes crime easier to police, using the media to figure out who somebody is. A03:
