Procedure:

Asch tested conformity buy showing participants two large white cards at a time. One card had a standard line , and the other card had 3 comparison lines. One of the three lines was the same length as the standard line and the other two were significantly different meaning they were clearly wrong. The participant was asked which of the three lines matched the standard line.

 

123 American undergraduate males took part. Each naïve participant was tested individually with a group of between six and eight confederates. On the first few trials confederates gave the correct answers but then they all started giving the same wrong answers. Each participant  completed 18 trials. On 12 critical trials confederates gave the wrong answer.

 

Findings:

The naïve participant gave the wrong answer 36.8% of the time. 25%
