The speaker of the poem may be thinking back to his childhood and how he used to view climbing his grandfather as climbing a mountain. ... Through imagining climbing his grandfather as a mountain, the speaker is able to recall clear details from his childhood of scaling a great man.
structure, form and language
there are no stanzas to reflect the one mass mountain the narrator has to climb. the base of the poem is wider and narrows down the represent the mountain summit, the syllabic structure reduces in each line.
